The Best Ways to Experience Birmingham on a Budget

Some of our midwest states don’t see as many large cities as you do on the coastlines. But this doesn’t mean there aren’t impressive cities in the midwest, you just have to know where to go. Let’s go over how to experience a bit of Alabama on a budget.

Hit the Museums and Parks

Alabama has always had rich land filled with iron ore, coal, and limestone. The city’s abundant mineral supply aided in the settlement in 1871. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is an interpretive museum that shows the struggles of African Americans in the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, Birmingham was on the wrong side of history during the early antebellum years of this country. There is much to learn from the horrors that happened right in this city. The museum is a MUST for understanding the essential history of Birmingham.

The Sloss Furnaces is another landmark vital to the establishment of Birmingham. As mentioned above, this area was rich with minerals. These blast furnaces were completed in 1882 and produced over 24,000 tons of iron within the first year of operation. As a result of the Historic American Engineering Record, the furnaces became part of the historic preservation of Alabama.

Practice Your Game

Birmingham sits at the very end of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Everywhere you look, there are magnificent views of mountains, forests, and fields of green. A great way to take in the views while having some fun is by playing a round of golf. Alabama has some of the best golf courses.

The hilly land of Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge is one of the longest courses in the Nation. The Renaissance Ross Bridge Salon and Spa sit at the center of the course. Golf and then a day at the spa sounds like the perfect treat when on vacation. Bent Brook Golf Course is located in Birmingham as well. If you decide to move to the city of Birmingham, there are several country clubs to visit. We recommend the Birmingham Country Club. It was founded in 1915 and is on the previous site of the Case Farm. There are 161 acres of hills and valleys. It was intended to be the site of a real estate development but was turned into a golf course instead. There are plenty of leisurely options besides golfing such as drinks and dining, swimming, and a racquet complex.

Experience Outdoor Adventures

Some of the most fun a city has to offer are outdoor activities. Along with the numerous parks in Birmingham, there are plenty of other natural attractions. Sims Cave Park is a cave located under Bryant Mountain. For those who wouldn’t mind squeezing through caverns and passageways underground, it’s the perfect plan for your visit. There are over 100 caverns underneath the mountain. You even have to sign a waiver prior.
